Chinese Traditional Music Culture(XJTISS)

June 27th to July 18th, 2023

[Introduction]

Music, the universal language of mankind, is the most vivid and authentic form of expression of different cultures. As a country with vast territory and large population, China boasts a wide variety of singing, dancing, and instrumental music. We have selected some representative forms to present the beauty of traditional Chinese music culture to learners through a combination of free discussion of culture and performance practice.

Teaching Masters

Liang Rui

Vice Professor of Music Education Center of the School of Humanities and Social Science at XJTU. From 2015 to 2018, she taught at the Confucius Institute at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. During this period, she organized many cultural lectures, art exchange activities and concert performances. She offers a graduate course, Chinese music appreciation, and is dedicated to the international exchange and dissemination of Chinese music culture by guiding international students in various competitions, performances, and exchanges related to Chinese traditional music.

Gao Hejie

Doctor of Ethnomusicology, professor and postgraduate tutor. He is a member of the International Society for Traditional Music (ICTM), a researcher at the Center for Ethnic and Folk Literature and Art Development, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, P.R.C., and a member and secretary-general of the Education Steering Committee in Shaanxi Higher Education.

Cai Canhuang

Professor of Institute for Australian and Chinese Arts and Culture, Western Sydney University. He received his bachelor’s degree in Chinese Music from the Chinese Culture University, his master’s degree in Ethnomusicology from the University of Sheffield, England, and his master’s degree and doctorate in Anthropology from the University of Oxford, England. He has served at the Chinese Culture University, the University of South China, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Australian Centre on China in the World of the Australian National University, the Department of East Asian Studies of the Australian National University, the Quanzhou Normal University, and the University of Adelaide, Australia. His research covers the fields of ethnomusicology, instrumentalism, material anthropology, and neo-Chinese studies, with two books and over 30 scholarly articles in Chinese and English. He has received academic honors and research grants from the American Musical Instrument Society, the Taiwan Foundation for Culture and the Arts, the Chiang Ching-Kuo Academic Foundation, the University of Oxford, UK, the Australian Government, the Australian National University, the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, the Hong Kong Research and Development Council, the International Centre for Asia-Pacific Studies, the Netherlands, the National Gugak Center, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, USA.

Zhang Zhixin

External expert in our school-enterprise cooperation, and a young guqin player. She has been in Singapore for a year as a visiting scholar.

Qin Jian

Outstanding young wind instrument player.

Qin Liping

Graduating from the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts, she is the director of the Xi’an Art School’s opera discipline. She is proficient in Kunqu Opera, Beijing Opera, and folk dance performances and is an experienced young opera performer.

Ma Ji

Excellent Chinese Xiqu opera percussionist.

【Curriculum system】

Based on general knowledge of traditional Chinese music culture, the course discusses Chinese musical instruments, musical composition, musicians, and some ethnic folk music forms. We have invited researchers and performers from different regions and fields to explain, analyze and discuss the history, and current situation of Chinese music and its related issues from their perspectives and topics, and provide more possibilities for understanding and inheriting Chinese music through practice and experience.

Enrollment target: Undergraduate students in their fresh years, as well as graduate students with unlimited grades, are recruited globally.

Enrollment: No limit on the number of students online. unlimited number of students offline. Students from our school participate in offline courses, while students from other schools participate in online or offline courses.

Deadline: 7th July

Student treatment: Xi'an Jiaotong University provides a study certificate (completion certificate) for this summer course.
